George Domenici
He came into this world on May 5, 1920, and he left this world on October 27, 2017, at
97 years old surrounded by family. George Domenici was a very special person, a role model, a loyal friend, a good husband, a good father, and a good grandfather, uncle, cousin, and a humble man. He especially liked children and was a positive influence on many young peoples’ lives. Everyone who knew George knew what an exceptional man he was. George was fiercely independent, living in his home alone and driving until he was 93 years old.
He was an avid sportsman and learned his favorite life-long pastimes of hunting and fishing from his dad and uncles. George shared this love of the outdoors with many others by teaching them to hunt and fish. Although he loved to fish the many lakes in Northern New Mexico and was a natural fish finder, he didn’t care to eat them and generously gave away all the fish to friends and family. As a life-long resident of Albuquerque he only left the state to hunt pheasants and geese in the mid-west. George had a great sense of humor, often sharing jokes and puns. He enjoyed being around his large family and many friends. He often said, "People are funnier than anyone." He will be forever missed, but his spirit and love will stay with all who knew him.
George was drafted and served in the Army in Japan and the Philippines during World War II as a photographer. Among his many memories from that time, one of his favorite stories was the time he met Bob Hope who commented on how quickly George developed photos of him during a USO show. George was honorably discharged from the Army as a Lieutenant in 1953. He reminded everyone that "Freedom isn’t free." Following his service, George worked in his family businesses; including selling bearings, working as a food wholesaler, selling sporting goods, and managing the family’s substantial properties in Albuquerque.
George was preceded in death by his parents Antonio and Emma Domenici; his wife Jean; his brothers Lawrence, Tony, and Robert; his sister Ida Matteucci, and his long-time friend Jim Wilkins. George is survived by his brother Charlie Domenici; his sisters Theresa Menicucci and Lilly Tomasi; his long-time friend Joe Saavedra; his children Dennis Seibert (Julie); Linda Newberry (John); and Georgann Taylor (Jeff); many nieces and nephews, grandchildren Jodieleigh Rael (Pete), Brandie Chavez (David); and great-grandchildren Roman, Lyla Marie, and he had a special relationship with his great-granddaughters Tiffany and Charlotte, who adored "Borge."
Funeral services are under the direction of French Mortuary. The graveside service will take place on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. at George’s final resting place beside his wife at 10:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
