Tom Segura sees himself as a comedy reporter

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR

Tom Segura is a comedy reporter. No, really, he is.

And he’s quick to go on the record that he’s not a political commentator.

“I’m a guy who talks about what happens in the world,” he says in an interview from Ann Arbor, Mich. “I’m a big news junkie and I’m pretty well-informed. There are comedians already in that lane. I find myself often wondering, how do I separate myself from Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert?” Segura was born in Cincinnati.

The 37-year-old is known for his Netflix specials “Completely Normal” and “Mostly Stories.”

He has made television appearances that include “Conan,” “Workaholics,” “Happy Endings,” “The Late Late Show,” “How To Be a Grown Up” and multiple stand-up appearances on Comedy Central.

Segura regularly appears on XM Radio comedy channels and fan favorites such as “Bennington Show.” He’s also a regular guest on the podcasts”The Joe Rogan Experience” and “WTF with Marc Maron.”

He gained ground on his own podcast, “Your Mom’s House.” He co-hosts it with his wife and fellow comedian Christina Pazsitzky.

“My wife and I have an understanding that if it’s funny, we’re going to talk about it,” he says. “We don’t get offended.”

While the couple work together often, Segura says life is a balancing act.

“It’s a little bit of a challenge,” he says. “We have a boy who is almost 2. We are scheduling time with him and doing shows. I’ve learned since our son was born that I have to tell my wife in advance of everything I’m doing. I want her to be fully prepared when I’m not going to be at home. It’s all about planning.”

As Segura’s tour winds down, he’s also been working on new material.

In the past month, he filmed a new comedy special.

“As an art form, I feel comics don’t get the credit I feel they deserve,” he says. “Months of writing is done for an hour of material. Stand-up is getting more respect. Some of the people doing it are extraordinary talent. They are writing, directing and performing. That’s incredible.”
