Single-payer system not best for NM

-

OUR NEW MEXICO senators are now supporting single-payer health care. Both Sens. (Martin) Heinrich and (Tom) Udall have stated they believe health care is a human right and should be provided by the government. Sadly, they were not concerned about the human rights of New Mexicans when they helped pass a deceptive universal health care bill that has let us all down.

Sens. Udall and Heinrich implemented the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — without bipartisan support. They implemented a plan that has failed Americans across our nation including here in New Mexico.

Furthermore, they have failed in the last eight years to correct serious flaws in the legislation that make it unaffordable and which were known when the bill was passed. Even worse, the legislation does not keep the many promises made to the American people such as keeping your doctor, improving health care and making health care available to all citizens . ...

Based on their voting records, it appears the N.M. senators have become puppets of the Democratic Party rather than representatives of all New Mexicans. The fact is that Medicaid is available for all persons who can’t otherwise afford health insurance. This allows persons with critical care issues to be treated. We have excellent facilities such as UNMH that treat New Mexicans regardless of their financial status.

A single-payer system is simply the current fad for the Democrat Party. It is proposed by a senator who admits to being a Socialist. The idea of single-payer health care is another way of saying: “Let the government take care of you” and “Trust us.” This is not in the best interest of New Mexicans.

Our senators have stopped representing all New Mexicans and have become representatives of only their political party. It is high time for Sens. Udall and Heinrich to consider what is best for New Mexico! PHIL QUARLES Albuquerque
