Dear Vicki: I have fallen in love with the retro-look clothing that I see on television shows, and I would like to make a dress that has a full skirt and fitted bodice. Can you find me a pattern that reflects that style but also looks “today”? Thanks. — Carise B.

Dear Carise: I think Vogue 8787, with its full skirt and slim midriff, will give you the look you want. I love the cowl neckline, too. There is a view with a straight skirt and tiny sleeves, so you can make it twice with one pattern.

Anytime you use these close-fitting retro-look designs, be careful and measure, because there is not nearly as much ease as you have with other looks.

Dear Vicki: All of my winter clothes are out now, and some of the sweaters — my favorites ones — have moth holes in them. I’m not planning on mending them because there are too many. How do I prevent this next year? Don’t tell me moth balls

— the smell is terrible and makes me think of old stuff — there should be another way. Help, please. — Meribeth P.

Dear Meribeth: My condolences; I’ve experienced this mini disaster. There are insect bombs that you could set off at least once during storage that will help and not smell like moth balls. The best help is to carefully launder and/ or dry-clean everything before storing. It really makes all the difference.

Now, the ruined sweaters, don’t throw them away, but wash them in hot water several times. Then you can cut them up and use them to make purses, vests and all sorts of crafty items! It’s the ultimate recycling.
