Buzzer-beating 3 lifts Greyhounds to upset win

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORTS

Senior guard Lamarquis Thompson banked in a 3-pointer with 1 second on the clock to give the Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team a 73-72 upset of 16th-ranked Fort Lewis at Dreamstyle Arena - the Pit on Saturday.

The game was the first in an afternoon men’s Division II doubleheader at the arena — the teams involved are calling it the RMAC-LSC Challenge opener, since it pits teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Lone Star Conference.

Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands played the second game, and then New Mexico tipped off its season later Saturday against visiting Northern New Mexico.

Thompson, a 6-foot-3 guard from Houston, had game highs of 23 points, 13 rebounds and hit all four of his 3-point tries. Jemani Pierce added 21 points in his Greyhounds debut.

Zach Parker’s 3-pointer at the 10:03 mark gave Eastern New Mexico a 23-10 lead. But Fort Lewis rallied back as ENMU went 1-of-12 from the field over the final four minutes of the first half, which ended in a tie at 34.

Rasmus Bach scored 20 points and Marquel Beasley added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Fort Lewis.

HIGHLANDS 85, WESTERN NEW MEXICO 81: Jordan Jones scored 25 points, Mike Nwabuzor added 22 and New Mexico Highlands held off Western New Mexico in the season-opener for both teams Saturday at the Pit.

Jacob Holland chipped in 15 points for the Cowboys, who built a 49-39 halftime lead and fought off several comebacks by the Mustangs. Haneef Vaughn-Wilson scored 22 points to pace four WNMU players in double figures. Willie McCray added 19 points, and Jordan Enriquez had 14.
