NM Dems condemn candidate after stalking arrest
David Alcon is seeking nomination in the 2nd Congressional District
WASHINGTON — The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee disavowed the campaign of a candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District who was arrested for stalking on Saturday in Albuquerque.
Metropolitan Detention Center records show David Alcon, 39, was arrested by Albuquerque police around 3:30 p.m. in Downtown on a warrant out of Santa Fe.
Congressional Republicans, who are struggling to contain damage from accusations that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore molested a 14-year-old girl when he was 32, called on Rep. Ben Ray Luján, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, to cut ties with Alcon.
“Ben Ray Luján can’t remain silent about this gross misconduct in his own backyard,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Jack Pandol said. “Given Lujan and the DCCC’s repeated insistence they will play in contested primaries, Luján and the Democratic establishment must pledge to withhold support for Alcon immediately.”
DCCC spokeswoman Meredith Kelly said Alcon never had the DCCC’s backing. Alcon had not filed his campaign with the Federal Election Commission.
“This individual’s alleged behavior is despicable and serious, and he is not fit to run for office in New Mexico or anywhere else,” Kelly said in a statement to the Journal. “The DCCC has not had any interaction with him and, in light of these allegations, neither Chairman Luján nor the DCCC will support his candidacy.”
A woman in Santa Fe contacted police Oct. 28 reporting that Alcon sent text messages declaring his love for her and warning that she “better not leave,” according to court documents. He later sent images of his genitals, followed by messages that suggested he was watching her and that he was at her apartment.
The woman told police that she repeatedly asked Alcon to leave her alone.
She said she’d known Alcon for around 10 years, and although he had texted her in the past, the tone of this conversation was unusual, police said.
Alcon is one of several Democrats seeking the nomination in the 2nd Congressional District.
