In our cover story, Arts Editor Adrian Gomez talks with Jerry Montoya, one of nearly 100 artists participating in next weekend’s Winter Spanish Market. Montoya is known for his retablos, crosses and tin work, and the distinctive pieces where he fuses all three mediums.

The market, like the bigger summer event, will have music, food, demonstrations and plenty of art for sale.

And if you’re interested in browsing art for gift-giving, check out Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts’ story about the 29th Annual Old Church Fine Crafts Show, starting Friday in Corrales. The wide range of arts and crafts will be priced at $2 to $450.

Roberts also previews “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” opening Friday at Aux Dog Theatre. The at-times funny and poignant piece traces women’s relationships to their clothing at big moments in their lives.

Features writer Elaine D. Briseño traces a different kind of relationship, this one of a family and a house.

Joseph and Augusta Yott built their new home in 1894, on what is now 12th Street in Albuquerque’s North Valley. The home has weathered changing times and more, still standing and sheltering Yott relatives.

Features writer Ollie Reed Jr. chats with Titus O’Brien, assistant curator of art at the Albuquerque Museum, about the influence of calligraphy and Zen meditation in the current exhibit, “When Modern Was Contemporary.”

David Steinberg reviews new children’s books by two authors, Ross Van Dusen and Jan Brett, who are planning local signing events.

And in Travel, we look at the many holiday events planned across northern New Mexico in the next few weeks.

Until next week, Helen Taylor Editor
