Johnson to take over for Floyd at UTEP

EL PASO — Phil Johnson was named UTEP’s interim men’s basketball coach on Tuesday, following the sudden retirement of Tim Floyd.

Floyd announced his immediate retirement after a 66-52 loss to Lamar on Monday night.

The Miners (1-5) will host longtime rivals New Mexico State (Thursday, 8 p.m.) and New Mexico (Saturday, 7 p.m.). The Aggies beat UTEP 72-63 on Saturday in Las Cruces.

The 63-year-old Floyd took over at UTEP before the 2010-11 season, winning 138 games.
