Judge Garcia retiring from Court of Appeals
He has served on the bench since his appointment in Nov. 2008
Court of Appeals Judge Timothy Garcia has announced his retirement from the court, the second such announcement in a week for the appellate body.
Garcia has served on the court since his appointment in November 2008 by Gov. Bill Richardson.
While Garcia’s last day on the court will be Feb. 2, 2018, he is not going into full retirement.
“My plan is to go become a mediator and an arbitrator. I’m hoping to try to get involved in some of the national mediation and arbitration work done in the sports arena,” Garcia told the Journal Thursday.
Before his time on the court, Garcia served about six years as a judge in the 1st Judicial District Court overseeing Rio Arriba County jurisdiction. And before that he served in private practice.
“I really appreciate my opportunity to serve on the court, both trial and appellate, for what has been about 15 years now. And I have a tremendous respect for all of my colleagues and staff who work so tirelessly… to carry out justice,” Garcia said.
Garcia, 61, is a tennis player and competes nationally and internationally.
He and his wife, Nancy Long, live in Santa Fe.
Judge Jonathan Sutin will retire at the end of the year.
The Judicial Nominating Commission will now recommend replacements for Sutin and Garcia to Gov. Susana Martinez, who must appoint their replacements.
