Columbus rallies after squanderin­g 3-goal lead

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus took a threegoal lead in the first period Thursday night, but Josh Bailey and the New York Islanders weren’t going to go quietly.

The Islanders surged back to tie the game in the second period and trailed by only one for most of the third, but the Blue Jackets held on for a 6-4 win. Bailey got the first hat trick of his career in the losing effort.

“It’s tough to come back and win hockey games when you get down by that much,” Bailey said. “We battled, found a way to get our legs going and compete the rest of the way and make it close, but it was just frustratin­g the way we let it get away.”

Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and Sergei Bobrovsky knocked down 21 shots for the Blue Jackets. CAPITALS 5, BRUINS 3: In Boston, Alex Chiasson scored two third-period goals, the second on a shorthande­d breakaway with 8:29 left, as Washington beat Boston.

Patrice Bergeron scored twice for Boston, moving past Bobby Orr on the team’s all-time list with his 265th career goal and adding another in the final seconds.

Braden Holtby stopped 33 shots for the Capitals,

who have beaten Boston 11 straight times. PREDATORS 4, OILERS

0: In Edmonton, Alberta, Juuse Saros made 46 saves for his second career shutout and Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist as Nashville kept up its torrid pace with a victory over Edmonton.

Pontus Aberg, Kevin Fiala and Roman Josi also scored for the Predators (207-4), who are 10-1-2 in their last 13 games and have won 10 straight vs. Edmonton.

DUCKS 3, BLUES 1: In St. Louis, Kevin Roy scored twice and John Gibson made 29 saves as Anaheim defeated St. Louis.

Andrew Cogliano also scored for Anaheim, which has won three of four.

WILD 2, MAPLE LEAFS 0: In St. Paul, Minn., Alex Stalock stopped 28 shots to finish his first NHL shutout in three seasons, steering Minnesota past Toronto.

Tyler Ennis scored early and Mikael Granlund added a late goal for the Wild. CANADIENS 2, DEVILS

1: In Montreal, Tomas Plekanec scored 1:52 into OT as Montreal beat New Jersey to snap a three-game slide.

Andrew Shaw scored for the Canadiens (14-14-4) in the first period and Carey Price made 31 saves in his ninth straight start.

FLYERS 2, SABRES 1:

In Philadelph­ia, Valtteri Filppula scored the gamewinner with 2½ minutes left in the second period and Travis Sanheim netted his first career goal to help Philadelph­ia win its fifth

straight game.

Brian Elliott made 19 saves for the Flyers. BLACKHAWKS 5, JETS

1: In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Patrick Kane and Nick Schmaltz each had a goal and an assist as Chicago extended its season-high winning streak to four games with a victory over Winnipeg.

Vinnie Hinostroza, Tommy Wingels and Michal Kempny also scored for the Blackhawks. Corey Crawford made 27 saves. WILD 2, MAPLE LEAFS 0: In St. Paul, Minn., Alex Stalock stopped 28 shots to complete his first NHL shutout in three seasons, steering Minnesota past Toronto for its fourth straight victory.

Tyler Ennis scored early and Mikael Granlund added a late goal for the Wild. AVALANCHE 2, PANTHERS 1: In Denver, Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves as Colorado beat Florida.

Colorado won 7-3 in Florida on Saturday night and swept the season series behind a strong game from MacKinnon.

SHARKS 3, FLAMES 2: In Calgary, Alberta, Joonas Donskoi scored the gamewinner late in third period and had an assist to lead San Jose over Calgary.

Justin Braun began the sequence by knocking Johnny Gaudreau off the puck in the Sharks end, beginning a 3-on-2 rush.

LIGHTNING 4, COYOTES 1: In Glendale, Ariz., Nikita Kucherov scored to remain tied for the NHL goals lead as Tampa Bay beat Arizona for its season-high sixth straight victory.

Kucherov matched Washington’s Alex Ovechkin with his 22nd goal to help the NHL-best Lightning push league-worst Arizona.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, PENGUINS 1: In Las Vegas, Nev., Jon Merrill scored his first goal of the season, at 8:17 of the third period on an assist from Erik Haula, to lead Vegas past Pittsburgh.

A late Penguins comeback was foiled when Pittsburgh’s Chad Ruhwedel went off for hooking at 17:58.
