John Louis Gunby, 89, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2017.

John was born December 17, 1927 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana but lived in Albuquerque since 1958. Today would have been his 90th birthday.

He loved his work and the people he worked with at Sandia National Laboratories. He retired from there after 32 years. John enjoyed horse racing, hunting, working on cars and all sports. But nothing was as important to him as his wife, his family and his grandchildren. John was a patriot and served in the United States Marines during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1948. When anyone thanked him for his service, he responded, "It was my honor." He taught his children to love this country and to fight for freedom.

The family extends sincere gratitude to Kaseman Presbyterian Hospice for their loving care of our mother’s beloved husband and our devoted father and to French Funerals and Cremations for helping us through this difficult time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Gunby and Johnie Louise Evans; his sister, Ouida Shafner; his brother, Mac Evans and his brother - in- law, Pete Wheeler. John is survived by his wife of 66 years of marriage, Irene L. Gunby of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Cathy L. Good and Raymond Cohen of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Terri L. Cole and Kenton Walz of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Debbie J. Hawthorne and her husband, Jim of Clovis, NM; sister, Jean Wheeler; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Private family services were held at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army www.salvationarmy.org. Please visit our online guestbook for John at www.FrenchFunerals.com
