Javier "Harvey" Chavez, 83, of W. Irvin Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at his home.

A vigil is scheduled for 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 11, 2018 at

San Jose Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, January 12, 2018 at San Jose Catholic Church with Fr. Martin Cordero officiatin­g. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangemen­ts.

Javier "Harvey" Chavez was born August 28, 1934 in Carlsbad, New Mexico to Miguel and Jesusita (Subia) Chavez. He graduated from Carlsbad High School. Harvey married Charlotte Chavez June 20, 1954. He served in the Army National Guard for 20 years. Harvey then worked as a meat cutter for Safeway and later Furrs retiring in 1998. He enjoyed music and loved playing the guitar. Harvey was a member of San Jose Catholic Church and member of Holy Name Society. He never turned down the opportunit­y to be with friends and often helped those in need. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Cartolla "Charlotte" Chavez; daughter, Danette Martinez; and granddaugh­ter, Tamika Gonzales. Survivors are his daughters, Dr. Brenda Chavez of Albuquerqu­e, NM., Anna Gonzales of Carlsbad, NM.; sons, Dr. Albert Chavez of Carlsbad, NM., Ricardo Gonzales of Carlsbad, NM.; grandchild­ren, Karen Urquidez, Aaron Gonzales, Sr., Kelly Moraga, and Bryan Martinez; greatgrand­children, Trystan Urquidez-Rodriguez, Aaron Gonzales, Jr., Joseph Moraga, Isaiah Moraga, Alexander Martinez, Jaden Martinez. Caregiver of many years, Jeanette Wallace. Brothers, Daniel Chavez of Carlsbad, NM., Carlos Lopez of Carlsbad, NM., Miguel Chavez of Albuquerqu­e, NM., Ramon Lopez of Austin, TX., sister, Criselda Porras of Carlsbad, NM., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
