Salas hits 1,000 points, Aggies win WAC opener

LAS CRUCES — Brooke Salas scored 33 points, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in her career, as New Mexico State topped winless Chicago State 74-59 on Saturday afternoon at the Pan Am Center.

Salas added 13 rebounds in a do-everything performanc­e for the Aggies (7-8), who needed it in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Chicago State (0-16) held the Aggies to 4-of-20 shooting from the field in the second quarter and led 32-27 at halftime.

Gia Pack scored 12 points and Monique Mills hit three 3-pointers and added 10 points for NMSU. Tyeshia Bowers’ 27 points led Chicago State.

Salas, a 5-foot-11 junior from Placentia, Calif., is the 23rd player in NMSU women’s history to score 1,000 points. TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIV. 60, WNMU 55: In Silver City, Ciara Fields scored a game-high 18 points for Western New Mexico (0-14, 0-6 Lone Star), but TWU (6-6, 3-3) scored the game’s

In Tampa, Fla., Napheesa Collier had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (13-0, 3-0 American Athletic Conference). UConn shot 54 percent from the field and hit the century mark for the fourth time this season — while holding USF star Kitija Laksa scoreless.

Laura Ferreira had a tough night shooting for USF (12-4, 2-1), finishing 1-for-16 for two points. No. 6 BAYLOR 83, KANSAS 48: In Lawrence, Kan., Kalani Brown scored 22 points and Dekeiya Cohen had 15 to help Baylor (14-1, 4-0) win its 11th straight game. Christalah Lyons led Kansas (11-4, 2-2) with 14 points.
