In our cover story, Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts previews “The U.S.-Mexico Border,” which opens next Saturday at the Albuquerque Museum. Artists bring to life the beauty and danger of the border in sculpture, photography, printmaking, installation and film.

Roberts also writes about the New Mexico Museum of Art’s centenary photographic exhibit, “Shifting Light: Perspectives in Photography,” where visitors can see works by such iconic names as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz and Dorothea Lange.

Roberts also previews “The Father,” a play about the tragic trajectory of dementia, opening Friday at the Vortex Theatre.

Our NM Focus is on Jonathan Hayes, the new executive director of Audubon New Mexico. Features writer Elaine D. Briseño profiles his career in conservation, which led him to New Mexico.

Features writer Rosalie Rayburn delves into a trend that shows no sign of slowing down: genealogy. Rayburn shares several local resources ready to help amateur sleuths fill out their family tree.

David Steinberg reviews “Because It Is So Beautiful, Unraveling the Mystique of the American West,” Robert Leonard Reid’s collection of essays.

Art reviewer Wesley Pulkka visits Warren Fine Art and Collectibles in Old Town, which is featuring the fantastical paintings of George H. Hayes III. His skillful works range from surrealism and fantasy to realistic flowers.

Until next week, Helen Taylor Editor
