Prep weekend: Wrestling, swimming
The annual Joe Vivian Classic begins this afternoon at Cibola High School, with many of the state’s top wrestling programs set to battle in one of the regular season’s most prestigious meets.
Although three of New Mexico’s premier programs — Cleveland, Piedra Vista and Rio Rancho — are skipping the meet, there are still a large number of top teams in attendance, led by Carlsbad, Santa Fe, Volcano Vista and Las Cruces.
The first session begins at 1 p.m. today. The finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

Metro Swimming/Diving Championships are slated Saturday at the West Mesa Aquatic Center. The city’s public schools will be joined by Bosque School, Rio Rancho and Cleveland. It begins at 8 a.m. COACHES HONORED:
Maxwell High boys basketball coach Eloy Brazil and Cibola softball coach Gene Victor on Thursday were among those honored as National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association for the 2016-2017 school year.
Brazil is in his seventh season with Maxwell and led the school to a state title last March, and has been coaching the sport for four decades. Victor is nearing 35 years with the Cougars and last spring surpassed the 500-victory plateau.
