Tractor Brewing hosts weekly event for writers of all backgrounds

Break through writer’s block with the help of your peers and some good craft beer during Writing Wednesday.

The weekly event at Tractor Brewing Co. in Nob Hill gives writers of all backgrounds a space to practice their craft.

“It’s actually quite simple, and it’s evolved,” said Jeremy Kinter, marketing and events director for Tractor Brewing. “We used to have writers bring in stuff to workshop, but for me and the other host (Josh Stuyvesant), it became too much because what we wanted to do was focus on the writing portion of it. … We changed the format to provide a space for writers. So what we do is reserve a bunch of seats and from 5 to 8 (p.m.) We just drink beer and write, which I think is the most important thing in writing.”

The group hosts seasonal writing competitions. Most recently, it held a Christmas short story competition. Next up is a romance short story competition in commemoration of Valentine’s Day and for bragging rights.

“We’re doing 1,400 words and then we all get together the week before Valentine’s Day,” Kinter said. “We all get together and read them and critique them and score them and pick our winner, and then we put them out at our Tractor locations so everyone else can read them.”

A few regulars attend the events every Wednesday, but there is plenty of room for more writers.

“We just want it to be a space for writers,” Kinter said. “A reason for people to block something off so they can just write and if dialogue happens naturally then it happens. Don’t go there expecting a whole social experience, because a lot of us are sitting there writing. If it happens naturally, then it’s fine. We just want to provide a fun and noncommittal environment. It’s open to poetry, graphic novel, anything. If people have a question, Josh and I are more than open to answer questions. It’s become interesting, the writers who come to Writing Wednesday who kind of have become a group. It’s kind of funny how it’s turned out that way.”
