Notre Dame women rally to beat Lady Vols

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jock Landale had 26 points and 12 rebounds as Saint Mary’s beat No. 13 Gonzaga 74-71 on Thursday to take sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.

Rui Hachimura came off the bench to score 23 points for Gonzaga (16-4, 6-1 WCC). Former Eldorado and UNM guard Cullen Neal scored three points on 1-for-5 shooting.

Calvin Hermanson added 16 points for the Gaels (18-2, 7-0), who won their 13th straight.

No. 2 VIRGINIA 64, GEORGIA

TECH 48: In Atlanta, De’Andre Hunter scored 17 points and Virginia won its ninth straight game.

It was another defensive masterpiec­e by the Cavaliers (17-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who limited Georgia Tech (10-8, 3-2) to 40.5 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.

NEBRASKA 72, No. 23 MICHIGAN 52: In Lincoln, Neb., James Palmer Jr. scored 19 points, Isaiah Roby had a career-high 14 and Nebraska (14-7, 5-3) beat Michigan for its first win over the Wolverines (16-5, 5-3) since joining the Big Ten.

COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES 81, NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 78: In Las Vegas, N.M., Chris Lewis scored 29 points for the Cowboys (11-7, 6-6 RMAC) in a loss to Orediggers (14-3, 8-3).

65, ENMU 62 (OT): In Portales, Shawn Shelton matched a career-high with 14 points for Eastern New Mexico (7-10, 2-6 Lone Star). Trey Sumpter’s 13 points led the Javelinas (7-10, 2-6), who won despite shooting only 19 percent in the first half.

ANGELO STATE 92, WESTERN NEW MEXICO 73: In Silver City, CJ Vanbeekum scored 12 points as the Mustangs (3-14, 0-8 Lone Star) fell to the Rams (13-4, 5-3). Women

No. 5 NOTRE DAME 84, No. 6 TENNESSEE 70 : In South Bend, Ind., Arike Ogunbowale scored 27 points as Notre Dame completed its largest-ever comeback to beat Tennessee.

The Irish (17-2) trailed by 23 points early in the second quarter but rallied with an aggressive defense that forced 28 Tennessee turnovers.

A 12-0 run by the Irish coincided with a nearly three-minute scoreless skid by Tennessee (16-2) to give Notre Dame a 70-65 lead with 4:12 to play that it would not relinquish.

No. 1 UCONN 78, TULSA 60:

In Storrs, Conn., Azura Stevens came off the bench to score 22 points and lead UConn to a win over Tulsa (8-11, 2-4 AAC).

Napheesa Collier had 19 points and Kia Nurse added 17 for the Huskies (17-0, 6-0) who have never lost in the conference. UConn has won 76 straight regular-season games and all four conference tournament­s.

No. 2 LOUISVILLE 77, PITTSBURGH 51: In Pittsburgh, Myisha Hines-Allen got 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds as Louisville (20-0, 6-0 ACC) stayed undefeated, beating Pittsburgh (9-10, 1-5 ACC) for its NCAA-leading 20th win.

VANDERBILT 82: In Nashville, Tenn., Alexis Jennings scored a season-high 27 points and South Carolina (15-3, 4-2 SEC) beat Vanderbilt (5-15, 1-5).

No. 11 MISSOURI 67, MISSISSIPP­I 48: In Oxford, Miss., Sophie Cunningham scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Missouri (16-2, 4-1 SEC) hit 12 3-pointers to roll to a win over Mississipp­i (11-7, 1-4).

WAKE FOREST 79 (OT): In Winston Salem, N.C., Imani Wright made nine 3-pointers and scored 31 points, Shakayla Thomas added 28, including all six of Florida State’s points in overtime, and the Seminoles (172, 5-1 ACC) rallied from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to defeat Wake Forest (10-9, 2-4).

No. 15 DUKE 86, VIRGINIA TECH 75: In Blacksburg, Va., Haley Gorecki scored a careerhigh 28 points, Lexie Brown added 23 and Duke (15-4, 4-2 ACC) defeated Virginia Tech (13-6, 2-4).

No. 16 TEXAS A&M 73, ALABAMA 54: In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Khaalia Hillsman and Chennedy Carter scored 20 points apiece and Texas A&M defeated Alabama (13-6, 3-3 SEC).

Clovis product Danni Williams added 13 points for the Aggies (15-5, 4-2).

DETROIT MERCY 27: In Detroit, Frankie Wurtz scored 15 points, Jessica Lindstrom added 14 points and nine rebounds and Green Bay (16-2, 6-1 Horizon) rolled over to a victory over Detroit Mercy (1-17, 1-6).

PENN STATE 70, No. 25 RUTGERS 67: In State College, Pa., Teniya Page made 4 of 5 free throws with a second left and finished with 34 points to lead Penn State (12-8, 3-4 Big Ten) to a win over Rutgers (17-4, 5-2).

SEATTLE 69, NEW MEXICO

STATE 59: In Seattle, Brooke Salas led the Aggies with 18 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Gia Pack with 15 points as NMSU (9-9, 2-1 WAC) lost to the Redhawks (9-10, 3-1).

KINGSVILLE 61: In Portales, senior forward and Mayfield High product Daeshi McCants scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lift Eastern New Mexico (9-7, 5-4 Lone Star) over the Javelinas (4-13, 1-8) in front of a Kids’ Day turnout of 1,868. McCants is the second Greyhound since 2000-01 to notch 10 double-doubles in one season.
