Jim Bruer and others looking forward to performing in the state

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Jim Bruer first visited New Mexico in 2017.

He fell in love with the area. “I was doing a private show, and I brought my wife along with me,” he says. “We had the best three nights. We went out into the canyons and felt so free. I’m really excited to be going back to such a beautiful place. Hopefully, during the days, I will venture out and see some sights.”

Bruer is making his way back to the state for three shows at the Stage at Santa Ana Star beginning Thursday, Jan. 25 with “Jim Bruer Live.”

Three decades into his comedy career and Bruer has some hits under his belt. He’s starred in “Half Baked” and was a regular cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” These are two avenues that brought him into mainstream culture.

Since then, he’s become a father and a husband. He still loves the New York Mets and finds comedy in everything.

“I have a passion for being on stage,” he says. “That’s what still drives me. When someone comes to my show, they are trying to have an escape from daily life. It’s up to me and my comedy to entertain. That’s the most fun part of my job to this day. Seeing that smile or hearing the laughs.”

I caught up with Bruer and chatted about what his upcoming show will be like and how he enjoys being a clean comic. To read more, see Page 12.

New Mexico has become a hotbed for filmmaking. One of the most anticipated movies of the year — “12 Strong” — opens nationwide today. The film stars Chris Hemsworth and it was filmed on location throughout New Mexico. To read more on the film, see Pages 14-15.

Also a New Mexico made film is Christian Bale and Wes Studi’s latest, “Hostiles,” which also opens in New Mexico. Make sure to check out Page 4 for the review.

If you want to catch some up-and-coming musicians, this is a perfect week for you. Albuquerque is hosting the reggae band New Kingston and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe is hosting Jessica Lea Mayfield. To read more, see Pages 20 and 22, respectively.

If you’re planning ahead, make sure to check out staff writer Rozanna M. Martinez’s story on Penn & Teller, who will perform at Legends Theater on Jan. 26. To read more, see Page 13.
