Film editing always piqued Faith Perez’s interest.

It’s the reason she began studying in the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media program at the University of New Mexico.

The junior also recently finished producing the second segment of “¡Colores!” for KNME. The episode airs at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, on New Mexico PBS, Channel 5.1.

“¡Colores!” is a weekly art series with stories devoted to the creative spirit. The series features local and national stories about film, visual and performing arts, theater, photography, literature, painting, sculpture, poetry and dance.

“It was easier this time around,” Perez says. “That means I’m learning more, which is nice.”

In Perez’s segment, she interviews Bernalillo artist Scott Greene.

Greene has lived in New Mexico for nearly 30 years, and it has influenced his paintings.

He also focuses on serious environmental concerns, with very real impact on the quality of life in this region of the country.

Perez was given the freedom to find an artist for the segment.

“I was looking at a couple of websites to find other artists,” she says. “I was drawn to Scott’s work because it was about environmental change and how humans are impacting the earth. That interested me a lot. His paintings were so provocative, and they told a story. It was more than just a pretty painting. I became invested in it.”

Perez was able to conduct a 40-minute interview and had to edit it down to 5 minutes, 38 seconds.

“The editing process was difficult,” she says. “I wanted to tell a complete story, and I had time restrictions. I think it turned out really well.”

Perez balances her UNM schoolwork with her job at New Mexico PBS.

“In my three years working at NMPBS, I have been given the amazing opportunity to produce two episodes for the weekly art show ‘¡Colores!,’ ” she says. “My first ‘¡Colores!’ production covered Albuquerque painter Max Carlos Martinez. Being my first producing gig at NMPBS, I was surprised at just how much creative freedom I was given to produce this episode. From choosing the artist to conducting the interview and editing the final piece, I was able to fully take on the role of producer. The best part of producing an episode is being able to meet these amazing artists and uncover what inspires them to create.”
