Knights sport top mark in league

Vegas romps past Hurricanes 5-1

-

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Golden Knights are giving Vegas an incredible, odds-beating story in their first year on the ice.

With a roster built on everybody else’s spare parts, this expansion team has the whole league playing catch-up.

James Neal and Jonathan Marchessault scored to help the Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Sunday night, giving the firstyear franchise the best record in the NHL.

The Golden Knights are 31-11-4, good for 66 points. That’s one ahead of Tampa Bay, which had the night off. Vegas is two wins shy of tying the record for wins by an expansion team, shared by the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers in 1993-94.

Just don’t expect the veteran-heavy Golden Knights to get caught up in their unexpected standing.

“It’s an interesting story, and it’s still being written,” forward Colin Miller said. FLYERS 2, CAPITALS 1 (OT): In Washington,Travis Konecny scored 27 seconds into overtime, and the surging Flyers beat the Capitals.

Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia, and Brian Elliott had 27 saves. The Flyers, who lost 10 consecutive games earlier in the season, have won three in a row and seven of eight to move into playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

“Coming in here and getting a win, it definitely says something about our character,” Konecny said. “There’s just that vibe in the locker room right now.”

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-best 29th goal for the Capitals. JETS 1, CANUCKS 0: In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the Jets extended their home winning streak to six games.
