‘WEDDING CENTRAL’ AT METRO COURT
BernCo Metro Court will be turned into ‘Wedding Central’
Metro Court judges will perform no-fee Valentine’s Day nuptials for more than 100 couples expected to show up to tie the proverbial knot Wednesday.
Love will be in the air Wednesday at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse as Metro Court judges prepare to perform no-fee Valentine’s Day nuptials for more than 100 couples expected to show up to tie the proverbial knot.
This will be the 18th year the judges will be performing weddings on this highly sought-after day, court officials said in a news release.
The ninth floor of the courthouse will be transformed into “Wedding Central,” decked out with flowers and other decorations.
Judges will take time out from their regular court and trial duties and work in shifts throughout the day to accommodate all who show up.
“This is one of the best parts of our job,” Chief Judge Edward L. Benavidez said in a statement. “We hear crime, addiction and dysfunction on a daily basis. It’s a nice change of pace to see folks in the courthouse for a joyous reason.”
Organizers said that Wedding Central will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There is no fee for the service. Judges said couples just need to bring their marriage license and two witnesses for the event. Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, firstserved basis, but they also can make an appointment by calling 505-841-8287.
For information on how to obtain a marriage license, contact the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office at 505-468-1243 or visit www.bernco.gov.
“We’re hoping to have another great turnout this year,” Judge Benavidez said, adding that “nearly 150 couples were married at Metro Court last Valentine’s Day, and our judges look forward to helping out with this special event each year.”
