Journal should not help new revival of racism

-

ALTHOUGH I absolutely believe in free speech and freedom of the press, the Albuquerque Journal will need to take account for the publication of the racist cartoon in Wednesday’s paper. …

This is a gross stereotype of an entire people. Dreamers are adults who came to the United States as children. They are not committing crimes; otherwise they would not fit within the parameters set up in DACA. This type of propaganda just spreads hatred toward non-white immigrants.

(One hundred sixty) years ago, the U.S. took New Mexico by force. At that time, many Anglo Americans who came to our territory saw my people as foreigners, even though our families had been here for generations. My grandparents and parents saw it, and I still see it today. Race relations have improved over the generations, but racism is still there. Unfortunately, it’s growing again under the Trump administration. What was unacceptable just a few years ago is commonplace today.

I ask the Journal this: What type of newspaper do you wish to be? One that represents the equality of all residents of this state, a state that is a “majority minority” state? Or one that represents that deep-seated racism that has once again reared its ugly head in this country. We New Mexicans are waiting for your answer.
