Police investigate Barelas shooting
Woman killed Thursday morning in 1500 block of Second Street SW
Detectives are investigating after a woman was shot and killed in Barelas on Thursday morning, according to a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department.
Officer Simon Drobik said officers went to the 1500 block of Second Street SW, near Avenida Cesar Chavez, after shots were fired in the area Thursday morning. He said that, when police arrived, they found a woman had been shot and killed.
He said police detained a man for questioning but didn’t know the man’s connection to the shooting or the relationship between the two.
Drobik did not know what led to the shooting and he did not identify the victim.
He said police are talking to
neighbors and friends to try to find out what happened.
Police cars and crime scene tape blocked the road on Second SW, between the Bridge Boulevard overpass and Cromwell.
The mobile crime scene lab parked outside a house while officers investigated. At one point, a group of people could be seen comforting one another nearby.
A neighbor down the street said they are accustomed to hearing gunshots at night from a house down the block.
Out of the six homicides in the city so far this year, five have been women. There have also been two justified homicides of men.
