WRESTLING
CHAMP AGAIN!: Robertson senior Jonathan Trujillo, at 145 pounds, polished off his fourth straight state wrestling individual championship Saturday, becoming just the 22nd person to win at least that many. He was among several area wrestlers to bring home gold medals from the event: 6A: Isaiah Martinez, Santa Fe, 170. 5A: Devin Atenci, Los Alamos, 106. 4A: Andrew Trujillo, Robertson, 120; Tyler Valencia, Taos, 132; Tristan Trujillo, Robertson, 160; Javier Tapia, Pojoaque Valley, 170; Darian Duran, Robertson, 195; Jessie Ayala, Taos, 220. Girls 4A: Elisha Duran, Taos, 131.
COACH HONORED: New Mexico Highlands University head wrestling coach Doug Moses, who helped revive the program when he came on board in 2005, will be inducted into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame this summer. A wrestler with Adams State, Moses won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship at 142 pounds, helping the team to a national title. He went on to coach for 20 years at Southern Colorado (now CSU-Pueblo) before taking the Cowboys’ reins. Most notably during his tenure at Highlands, Moses coached DII national champion Seth Wright in 2010.
BASEBALL
ON THE TEAM: Los Alamos High School graduate Jared Mang was named a pre-season Mountain West selection for New Mexico, Mang, a junior outfielder, hit .373 with 90 hits and 17 doubles last season.
BOWLING
ELKS ON TOP: Pojoaque Valley High School took second in class 1A-4A, as did Española Valley in 5A at the recent state bowling championships. The Elks’ Isaiah Maestas has the second-highest series in 1A-4A, at 598, as did Elkette LeeAndra Apodaca, at 460.
