Ann Leslie Stinchcomb

The Stinchcomb Family regrets to inform all that Ann Leslie Stinchcomb passed away from a heart attack in Oceanside, CA on February 12, 2018. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, Christian, volunteer and teacher and had countless friends throughout the community.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Connie and Glen Turner of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is survived by Dave, her husband of 50 years; daughter, Lee Harrison and husband Patrick of Shreveport, LA; son, Bob Stinchcomb and wife Emily of Lafayette, CO; grandchildren, Patrick Harrison, Jr., Carol Ann Harrison, Drew Stinchcomb, and Will Stinchcomb; her brother, Doug Turner, wife Lee and their families of Vancouver Island, Vernon, and Coldstream, British Columbia, Canada; sister, Jan Marrington and her family of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; sister, Patty Turner and her family also of Calgary.

Ann was born in the beautiful prairies in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Canada on July 19, 1944. Her father was in Europe in WW II and did not see her until she was a year and a half old when he returned from the war. She attended Nutana High School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where she was awarded the Senior Pin. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Additionally, despite her life-long asthma, she played on the varsity volleyball team. She then attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she met Dave while he was a resident physician in ophthalmology. They both attended the local campus Episcopal church, met for the first time while attending coffee hour, and were married one year later.

Following the completion of Dave’s training, they traveled to central India where Dave worked in an isolated, primitive and remote eye hospital. Patients brought family to cook and care for them. One leper dressed in rags came to the hospital without family and Ann provided food for him because no one else would care for him. After six months, they moved to Albuquerque where they have lived for nearly 50 years. Friends from Dave’s time in the service in Arizona and his internship in Utah were a wonderful help in getting them settled in Albuquerque. Ann always felt her American friends and neighbors were just as wonderful as those in Canada.

Ann loved the rural lifestyle of Corrales and living in their adobe home. She was active for years in helping preserve the character of Corrales. For more than 10 years, Ann worked throughout Albuquerque Public Schools as a long-term substitute teacher. In this role, she was hired by UNM to be a team teacher throughout the elementary, middle, and high school levels which allowed the teacher to complete her Master’s degree. Ann made it possible for eight teachers to earn their Master’s degrees. For years, she could not shop on the Westside without being approached by former students. Volunteering was in Ann’s blood. She was very active in the Albuquerque Junior League for many years. She volunteered extensively at St. John’s Cathedral where she served on the vestry and as a chalice bearer and an usher. Additionally, she supported the Church’s music program from its beginning, and it is now nationally known.

Ann loved spending time with her family, friends and traveling. Dave and Ann were inseparable companions and enjoyed doing everything as a couple. Every two years she traveled to Canada to reconnect with her high school and college friends. For years, she spent the fall and winter months in Oceanside, CA enjoying seafood and taking care of her numerous flowering plants and fruit trees. During the summers, Ann loved the sunny days and cool nights in Telluride, CO where she enjoyed walking along the San Miguel River and being surrounded by the scenic San Juan mountains.

Ann was a thoughtful, loving and generous woman who always thought of others. She had a beautiful smile and big dimples. Her warm and vivacious spirit will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life for Ann and a reception will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Cathedral Church of St. John, 318 Silver Ave SW in Albuquerque, NM (505) 2471581. Following the reception, Ann’s family will privately scatter her ashes in the peaceful bosque.
