Tax break just a ruse against public

-

THIS LETTER is in reference to the many articles that have been and are presently being published concerning the so-called tax break initiated by the Trump administration in 2017. It is addressed only to those of the working class who bring home a paycheck every two weeks or so.

If you do not relish the idea of paying a huge lump sum at the end the tax year, please take a minute or two to read this letter.

This so-called tax break is the same thing that was initiated by the Reagan administration back in 1986. Back then, it was called “Reaganomics.” Those of you in the work force today were not old enough to be affected by this action, therefore you would not understand how it worked.

Here is how it worked. The IRS reduced the amount of tax withheld by a very large amount. In some cases, it was more than 50 percent. Basically what they did was change the amount of deductions that most people carry so as to more or less balance out what tax was collected and what was owed at the end of the year. There is no doubt in my mind that this same method will be used in the coming tax year.

Because of the huge reduction in the tax withheld, this increased a persons’ gross pay by a substantial amount. By virtue of this increase it put a lot of us wage earners into another tax bracket. This increased the amount you would be paying over and above what a person would normally pay.

Don’t be misled thinking the new (amount) withheld will be all you will be paying. The tax schedule is not going to change. The amount that should have been withheld will be a huge lump sum you will be paying in 2019.

It really is tragic that the people we vote into office can use a ruse such as a so-called tax break to take advantage of the people that put them there. WILLIAM HOLUB Albuquerque
