DESERT INSPIRATION

Jared & The Mill hitting road after working on album in Joshua Tree

- JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Afew days before leaving on tour is what Jared Kolesar calls the calm before the storm.

There’s no downtime. He’s running around Phoenix making sure all of his personal and professional affairs are taken care of.

“It takes a lot of doing in order to get on the road,” he says in a recent phone interview. “We all have day jobs too. So scheduling is a huge factor in what we do.”

Kolesar is the vocalist for the Arizona-based rock band Jared & The Mill.

The band is rounded out by Michael Carter, Larry Gast III, Chuck Morris III and Josh Morin.

The band has been working on its coming album.

In fact, the band was out in Joshua Tree and Silver Lake, Calif., finishing the project.

“This time around we budgeted ourselves an ample amount of time,” he says. “There were days we couldn’t really put anything great down. When that happened, we closed up shop and walked around Joshua Tree. Just being there provided a lot of inspiration for us. We’re desert guys, and this is similar to being in Arizona. I have a few Joshua trees in my front yard. We definitely felt a bond there.”

Kolesar doesn’t know when the album will be released.

Though he says the band will release a single from the album about every month.

“Right now, we’re focusing on the singles,” he says. “They will eventually be put together on the album when it’s released. We’re not putting any pressure on ourselves to get it out there. The singles route seems to be the best fit for us now.”

A few years ago, Jared & The Mill released a documentary chronicling life on the road.

It was a way the band members could open up themselves visually to let audiences in.

“We’d like to revisit that soon,” he says. “I think it really helped us get more people into our music and lives.”

The band expects to be on tour through May, including a stop at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

“We’ve had so many opportunities come our way, it’s amazing,” he says. “We don’t take any of it for granted.”
