‘SPIN’ CYCLE Tigers Jaw to play Meow Wolf on tour supporting latest album

Ben Walsh is headed to New Hampshire in preparation for the start of his new tour.

He’s arriving a day early to give him some time to prepare and he’s ready for all the traveling. “I’ve done this before,” he quips about touring. “But this tour is special for us. We’re playing cities that we haven’t played in a few years. It’s exciting.”

Walsh is a member of the rock outfit Tigers Jaw. The band was formed in 2005, and in 2013 three members of the band decided to leave permanently.

That left Walsh and Brianna Collins continuing with the outfit as the core members.

Tigers Jaw is now touring in support of its latest album, “Spin,” released last year.

Walsh says writing for “Spin” began in January 2016. The process took longer because the band was on tour as well.

In all, it was about six to eight months of writing and being in the studio, Walsh says.

While the process was similar to that for previous albums for Walsh, he says “Spin” is the first album that sees Collins contribute songs.

“Brianna’s process is more collaborative,” he says. “She’s been in this band for a decade, so she definitely knows the sound and direction of the band. It was amazing to see her contribute the songs. She’s a strong and confident songwriter.”

The duo also worked again with producer Will Yip. The band previously worked with Yip on the 2014 album “Charmer.”

It was recorded with Yip at Studio 4 in Pennsylvania. “Will helped us track and look at the song structure in a similar way that we did with ‘Charmer,’” he says. “We found the right sequence for all the songs. I fell like we got the best out of everyone on the album. It’s a solid body of work.”

Tigers Jaw will perform at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe on Tuesday, March 6.

Walsh says it will be the band’s first performance in Santa Fe.

He’s also looking forward to performing at the venue. “Meow Wolf, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things,” he says. “It’s a one-of-a-kind place. When a smaller town like Santa Fe has a venue that is really unique, it helps out a lot on two fronts. The audience loves going there, and the band will always remember the show.”
