SPORTS SPEAK UP!

IT’S BEEN SAID, “The GREAT coaches have their players believing that they are better than even they think they are.” Well, Coach Weir is proving that he just might be one of those “Greats”. He has very quickly helped transform these student/athletes, these individuals, into a team. Thus the answer to WHOZTHAT LOBOS question/commentary; No player names on back of jersey represents that our Lobos are team first. Awesome job Coach Weir! — Gary M. When the Journal does its

Game Day coverage, it lists each player’s name and number, along with his updated stats, among other information. It’s handy and worth buying. — Randy, Journal

COACH WEIR and his staff, in year one, have built a program, on the heels of a 3-8 start, that had the villagers (Lobo fans) on the verge of wielding pitchforks and torches to storm the Bastille (The Pit). Fast forward to the first week of March, a regular season-ending 5 game winning streak, a third-place (with a bullet) conference finish,

a newly energized, rabid fan base ready to descend onto Vegas to ride or die with the hottest team in the conference. Hang on tight villagers, because the Lobos are bringing the heat to Sin City. — George Scott

I MUST ADMIT that when the Lobos were 3-8, I gave up on this team. I thought the season was over. To Coach Weir’s credit, he stuck to his plan and the players responded. They were picked 9th. They finished 3rd. All of this with a depleted squad. MWC Coach of the Year? — Leroy LOBOS JOSH KERR, from England, and Ednah Kurgat, Kenya, won Mountain Region Athletes of the Year. Congrats to both. I am wondering where the outrage is that these athletes took scholarships from deserving New Mexico athletes and related threats to boycott track meets … like you do with football and basketball. These athletes bring honor to UNM. We are lucky to have them. — Grey Beard

THE UNM STUDENT Fee Review Board wants to cut student fees to the athletic department. If the fees are cut, Regent, Rob Doughty is interested to hear where the students believe that money should come from. I’m interested and ask Rob Doughty if the athletic department deficit is forgiven, where should that money come from? — MarkSD
