Quemado holds off No. 12 Evangel Christian

No. 6 Springer crashes semis party

BERNALILLO — No. 12 seed Evangel Christian put Quemado on upset alert through three quarters, but the Eagles dominated the fourth quarter and won going away, 71-53 at the Class 1A boys quarterfin­als at Bernalillo High.

Quemado, seeded fourth, is in today’s semifinal at Bernalillo against No. 1 seed Melrose. No. 2 Maxwell also held its seed, defeating No. 7 Floyd in another quarterfin­al. Its semifinal opponent will be Springer. No. 4 QUEMADO 71, No. 12 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN 53: Surprising Evangel Christian led 37-36 through three quarters before Quemado came storming back, hitting 13-of-18 shots from the field in the final stanza.

DJ Mathis led Quemado (23-5) with 20 points, and three others joined him in double figures.

points for Evangel Christian (13-17), which shot 50 percent from the field for the game. No. 1 MELROSE 73, No. 9

GRADY 34: Melrose had 11 players enter the scoring column in the runaway victory. Sterling Sena scored 15 points and Blake Devaney added 12.

Isaiah Mitchell was the lone Grady scorer in double figures with 10 points. Chisum Rush grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Grady. No. 2 MAXWELL 61, No. 7 FLOYD 47: Kolten Riggs poured in a game-high 29 points and had 11 rebounds for Maxwell (27-1). Karl Gonzales added 13 points and matched Riggs’ 11 boards. Javin Chandler and Patrick Terry had 12 points apiece for Floyd, which shot 32 percent from the field. No. 6 SPRINGER 63, No. 3 RESERVE 41: Bryan Romero scored 18 points and Gabriel Garcia 17 to lead Springer (1911), a surprise entry into the Final Four. Billy Baca’s 15 points led Reserve, which shot 29 percent from the field.
