Top-seeded Virginia gets off to fast start

Nevada edges UNLV; SDSU, Utah St. move on

NEW YORK — Kyle Guy and No. 1 Virginia looked like healthy favorites in their postseason debut, beating Louisville 75-58 on Thursday in the quarterfin­als of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Guy scored 19 points in his speedy return from a sprained left knee and the top-seeded Cavaliers (29-2) weathered a second-half charge. They’ll play 19thranked and fourth-seeded Clemson in the first semifinal tonight in Brooklyn.

Devon Hall had 14 points as Virginia beat a Louisville (20-13) team desperate for an upset to augment its NCAA Tournament credential­s.

No. 2 VILLANOVA 94, MARQUETTE 70:

In New York, Jay Wright became the winningest coach in Villanova history with 414 as the Wildcats opened defense of their Big East tournament championsh­ip with a win over Marquette.

Wright improved to 414-165 since he took the job in 2001 and has led the Wildcats to the 2009 Final Four and 2016 national title.

The Wildcats (28-4) took control in the second half to oust Marquette (19-13).

No. 3 XAVIER 88, ST. JOHN’S 60: In New York, Trevon Bluiett scored 27 points and Kaiser Gates had 16 as Xavier looked every bit the top seed in the Big East tournament in a win over St. John’s (16-17) at Madison Square Garden.

The teams scuffled on the postgame handshake line and had to be separated as the crowd stood for the unexpected fracas.

The Musketeers (28-4) dominated in the second half on the Red Storm’s home court. Xavier plays Providence in a tourney semifinal tonight.

No. 5 DUKE 88, NOTRE DAME 70: In New York, Marvin Bagley III had 33 points and 17 rebounds, and Grayson Allen made his first five 3-pointers as Duke rolled to a victory over Notre Dame in the ACC quarterfin­als.

Allen finished with 23 points as the second-seeded Blue Devils (26-6) advanced to play sixth-seeded North Carolina in the second semifinal tonight.

Bonzie Colson had 18 points for the Irish (20-14).

No. 9 KANSAS 82, OKLA. STATE 68: In Kansas City, Mo., Malik Newman scored a career-high 30 points and Svi Mykhailiuk added 13 as Kansas beat Oklahoma State to reach the Big 12 semifinals.

Devonte Graham added 10 points, four rebounds and nine assists for the Jayhawks

(25-7), who were swept by the Cowboys (19-14) in the regular season.

No. 12 NORTH CAROLINA 82, No. 24 MIAMI 65: In New York, Theo Pinson scored a career-high 25 points and had 11 rebounds, lifting UNC (24-9) over Miami.

Ja’Quan Newton, who beat North Carolina nine days ago in Chapel Hill with a 40-foot buzzer beater, scored 17 points for third-seeded Miami (22-9). No. 14 TEXAS TECH 73, TEXAS 69: In Kansas City, Mo., Keenan Evans scored 25 points, including a fadeaway jumper in the closing minutes, as Texas Tech beat Texas (19-14) in the Big 12 quarterfin­als.

Jarrett Culver added 13 points for Tech (24-8), which advances to play No. 18 West Virginia.

No. 15 ARIZONA 83, COLORADO 67: In Las Vegas, Nev., Allonzo Trier scored 22 points, and Dusan Ristic had 15 points and 11 rebounds as Arizona used a big secondhalf run to roll over Colorado (17-15) in the Pac-12 quarterfin­als.

Arizona (25-7) earned a spot in the semifinals today against UCLA. WEST VIRGINIA 78, BAYLOR 65: In Kansas City, Mo., Esa Ahmad had 21 points as West Virginia (23-9) cruised past Baylor (18-14) to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament. No. 19 CLEMSON 90, BOSTON COLLEGE 82: In New York, Gabe DeVoe scored 25 points as Clemson (23-8) beat Boston College (19-15) to advance to the ACC tourney semis for the first time since 2011.

No. 22 NEVADA 79, UNLV 74: In Las Vegas, Jordan Caroline had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Nevada to a victory over UNLV in a quarterfin­al matchup.

Top-seeded Nevada (27-6) used a 22-6 run early in the second half to erase a 12-point deficit.

Kris Clyburn led No. 8 seed UNLV (20-13) with 19 points and six rebounds. SAN DIEGO STATE 64, FRESNO STATE 52: In Las Vegas, Trey Kell scored 16 points as San Diego State won its seventh straight game in ousting Fresno State in another quarterfin­al.

The fifth-seeded Aztecs (20-10) avenged a pair of regular-season losses to No. 4 seed Fresno State (21-11) and will play Nevada today in the semifinals. UTAH STATE 78, BOISE STATE 75: In Las Vegas, Sam Merrill scored 28 points, shooting 7-for-10 from 3-point range, as seventh-seeded Utah State came back to beat No. 2 seed Boise State (23-8) in another quarterfin­al.

The Aggies (17-16) advance to a semifinal game tonight against New Mexico.
