Lobo bats tamed in 5-1 loss; series is even

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno State’s Edgar Gonzalez held New Mexico to a run on four hits over seven innings as the host Fresno State Bulldogs topped the Lobos 5-1 on Saturday in Mountain West Conference baseball.

The Bulldogs evened the threegame series after UNM rallied for a 5-4 win on Friday night. The rubber game is 4 p.m. today and streams on themw.com

Gonzalez struck out seven and walked one. The lone Lobos run was unearned, driven in by Brayden Merritt on a fielder’s choice in the seventh inning after the Bulldogs had built a 4-0 lead.

Robert Gasser took the loss, allowing four unearned runs in 2⅔ innings. The Lobos committed three errors.

On Friday, UNM rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three ninthinnin­g runs to win 5-4. Freshmen Chris Dunn and Derek Marshall hit back-to-back homers to tie the game, and Danny Collier had a two-run single for the go-ahead run.

In Tuscaloosa, Ala., host Alabama defeated New Mexico State in the rubber game of a three-game set. Tristen Carranza homered and went 2-for-3 for the Aggies (9-8) against the Crimson Tide (13-3).

SOFTBALL: In Las Vegas, Nev., New Mexico State (11-12) lost twice Saturday at the UNLVhosted Rebel Classic.

The Aggies first fell to No. 1-ranked, 27-0 Washington 3-2 in 10 innings. Homers by Kelsey Horton and Niccki Butler against Husky ace Taran Alvelo in the fourth inning provided a 2-0 lead. Washington tied it in the fifth against starter Analise De La Roca and won it in the 10th with a walkoff single.

Horton homered again in the Aggies’ 5-2 nightcap loss to UNLV (16-7).

New Mexico improved to 4-18 with a split in two games Friday as host of the Lobo Classic. UNM beat Saint Mary’s 5-2 and fell to Sacramento State 7-5.

UNM was scheduled to play Howard and Saint Mary’s Saturday, then closes the tourney with a 1 p.m. game vs. Sacramento State today.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: UNM defeated Grossmont College 3-2 to close out tournament play on Saturday in Phoenix. UNM (2-4) returns to tournament action in Tavares, Fla., on Friday.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: New Mexico State fell 4-0 to BYU at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center in Albuquerqu­e. The Aggies’ next home match is on March 30 to face rival New Mexico.

MEN’S GOLF: With an 8-overpar 872, New Mexico State finished 13th of 17 teams at the Border Olympics tournament in Laredo, Texas. Isaac Merry led the way for NMSI with a 69-7472—215 (-1) to tie for 29th.
