Tres Volcanoes Community Collaborative School on the West Side expects about 600 students.

Albuquerque Public Schools recently announced the name of its newest school: Tres Volcanoes Community Collaborative School which is scheduled to open on the West Side this fall. Its mascot is Magma and school colors are red, gray and white.

The school -- scheduled completion this summer -- is expecting about 600 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. It eventually can accommodate as many as 1,600 K-8 students near I-40 and 98th Street (across the street from Nusenda Community Stadium), APS said in a news release.

The school is designed to alleviate crowding at Jimmy Carter Middle School and Painted Sky and S.R. Marmon elementary schools, APS said. Fifth-graders at the two elementary schools will make up the first mid-school class at Tres Volcanes.

Principal Monica Garciasalas traveled to the two elementary schools in late January to pre-register the students and let them vote on their mascot and colors, according to the news release.

Garciasalas also sought input from the community through surveys and meetings before a name was finalized.

The school will focus on blended learning with an emphasis on technology. Its modern design lends itself to collaborative and project-based learning.

The 245,000-square-foot, $50 million school sports 74 classrooms, multiple gyms, a large cafeteria with a wall of windows looking toward the Sandias and a multimedia room. Elementary student classroom are downstairs and middle school on the second floor, APS said.

Tres Volcanoes Community Collaborative School was designed by Jon Anderson Architecture. The General Contractor is Bradbury Stamm Construction. More than 150 people are working on building the school which expected to be completed this summer.
