IT’S HARD to put into words the Journal’s fabulous coverage of high school and college basketball these past few weeks. Stunning job guys. Unbelievable. — Ken in Tijeras

WHAT I learned this year studying UNM men’s and ladies’ basketball teams: We are blessed to have two of the best, brightest, young coaching talents leading each team, with superior assistant coaches and dedicated staff. Huge strides were made this year. We had the “stars” on each team we needed to compete. Now we need more confident supporting casts to win consistently. The Pit remains the best venue in America. When AD Nuñez is given the resources, we will soon regain and maintain national prominence and top attendance. Each glass is half full, and getting fuller. — Appreciative Alumnus

ONCE AGAIN Lobo fans represented themselves very well at Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas. Just wish this support would translate to a packed Pit here in Albuquerque. Coach Weir did an incredible job keeping his team on track when things were not going well earlier in the season, stuck to his game plan, dealt out appropriate discipline when necessary, and turned expectations completely around to end up strong. He certainly had my vote for coach of the year. — Bob, UNM Area

CONGRATULATIONS to the Los Lunas girls basketball team on winning the 5A state championship. You gals are a class act and I have watched you grow and mature throughout the season. You are very talented and good luck as you move on. Coach Marty Zeller, your coaching skills and booming voice are second to none! Great job coach and now you can rest your vocal cords for next season and get some well-deserved rest. You and your team are No. 1! — DS, Los Lunas

YOUR ARTICLE on Roy/ Mosquero girls basketball was interesting and sad due to the plight of small rural schools and communities which are vanishing. It would have been more insightful if your paper would have included the rich history of the Roy girls teams which were a basketball power 20 years ago and won numerous state championships. In addition, this program sent a few players to D-1 schools such as Western Kentucky and NMSU (the name Hartley rings a bell). Roy along with Clayton ruled 1-A and 2-A girls basketball in the 80’s and 90’s. — Larry in Pilar

I HAVE lived here my entire life. We don’t always do things the best, or at all. We rank last or next to last in some important categories. We get tired of being mediocre, or worse. Sometimes we get lucky. Paul Weir left a successful NCAA basketball program to come here and rebuild the Pit’s attendance and UNM’s men’s basketball team. Not an easy job. Left in ruins. He did not need UNM. We needed him. Ask Sam Logwood, Joe Furstinger and Antino Jackson and the other members of the team. We did good. Good for us. — Season Ticketholder Since 1976
