‘Incredible journey’

Tijuana-based Mint Field quickly gaining attention, acclaim

Amor Amezcua and Estrella Sánchez are on a tour that has them traveling through Europe and the United Kingdom.

It’s quite far from their hometown of Tijuana.

One thing they’ve realized is that they don’t want to leave Europe.

“It’s amazing here,” Sánchez says of being on tour. “It’s been an incredible journey for us. We never thought we’d be touring overseas.”

Sánchez and Amezcua are two members of the post-punk trio Mint Field.

The duo is touring in support of its debut full-length album, “Pasar de las Luces,” released on Feb. 23.

The album has gained a lot of critical acclaim, and the band’s profile continues to rise.

In fact, the Tijuana-based psych duo released the second single, “Quiero Otoño de Nuevo,” from the new album.

The 21-year-olds are making a speedy and powerful impression upon the U.S., having drawn international attention and secured slots at Coachella and South by Southwest Music Festival with the release of only one EP, “Primeras Salidas.”

Sánchez and Amezcua embrace all of the accolades and don’t put any pressure on themselves.

Since meeting years ago, the pair always knew they would make music together.

“We had a similar want in musical interest,” Amezcua says. “We got together one time, and we realized that we both had this dream to travel. We’ve wanted this and it’s all coming true.”

Mint Field will also be performing in Santa Fe, which marks its first time in New Mexico.

“We’ve played New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago,” Amezcua says. “On this tour, we’re hitting new places, and it’s exciting.”

Sánchez says all but two songs from the new album is being performed on this tour.

“We had a bit of an incident,” she explains. “We rented the wrong synthesizers, and we haven’t been playing those two songs that have synthesizers. But we have an exciting set of songs.”

The duo continues to write despite being on the road.

And their eyes are always on the next chapter.

“Our songs come together in many different ways,” Sánchez says. “It’s important for us to always be able to communicate with each other. That helps us be able to enjoy our time on the road.”
