A shooting outside a northeast Albuquerque grocery store Monday night left one man dead with no suspects in custody.

Police spokesman Simon Drobik said multiple calls reporting shots being fired came in around 9:30 p.m., leading police to the Smith’s store at Constitution and Carlisle NE.

He said arriving officers found an unconscious man nearby who was pronounced dead by rescue crews.

Drobik did not identify the victim, and said police have no suspects.

Louise Vigil first saw the red and blue lights flashing in a back alley.

“I was shocked when I looked out my window,” she said.

Outside, Vigil saw paramedics performing CPR on a man in the alleyway.

“It was very frightening,” she said. “He looked young.”

Vigil said there was nothing going on outside when she and her mother got home to the Aspen Plaza apartments around 8:30 p.m. and neither of the women heard gunshots or anything else.

On Tuesday, Vigil stood in the alley pointing out the only remnants of the slaying: three large stains in the pavement.

“This is where he lay,” she said, looking from the stains toward the Smith’s parking lot. “I don’t know how he made it this far losing this much blood.”

Crime scene tape wound around the entirety of the parking lot Monday night while a police car blocked every entrance.

Just to the north, on Aspen NE, police vehicles bunched around the Aspen Plaza apartments while a mobile crime lab idled down the block.
