A 15-year-old boy sitting in the back seat of a vehicle was shot and critically injured in the southwest part of the city Tuesday night, according to a spokeswoman for the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Felicia Maggard said around 10 p.m. deputies were called to Gun Club and Kirk SW, west of Coors, for reports of a person who had been shot and was in a vehicle.

“Deputies located a Dodge Challenger on Gun Club Road,” Maggard wrote in an email. “The rear passenger of the vehicle had a gunshot wound and was immediately transported to a local hospital.”

She said that passenger, a 15-year-old boy, is in critical condition Wednesday.

Maggard did not say what detectives believe led up to the shooting or who was with the teenager at the time. She did not identify him.

And Maggard said she would not try to find out any more information from detectives about whether the shooting is being considered random violence or the vehicle the boy was in was the target. She would not say if there are any suspects in the case, but no one had been arrested as of Wednesday night.

“No further details about the incident are available for release at this time and the investigation is ongoing,” Maggard said.

Neighbors living in the area south of Gun Club said they had heard one gunshot shortly before they saw the flashing lights of BCSO cruisers the night before.

By Wednesday afternoon, all that was left of the crime scene was a piece of police tape on the sidewalk.
