ATHLETICS

CONDOLENCE­S: Former New Mexico Highlands University athletic director, athlete and Robertson High School coach Joe Singleton died recently. He was 82. Singleton made news when he was named UC-Davis athletic director in 1969 at a time when few AfricanAme­ricans at traditiona­l colleges held such posts. He is a member of the UC-Davis Athletics Hall of Fame, as well as the National Associatio­n of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame. After retiring from UC-David, Singleton returned to Highlands, serving as its AD from 1996-2000.

BASEBALL

WINNERS AGAIN: Santa Fe High School won its second consecutiv­e Jim Pierce Memorial Tournament title, beating host St. Michael’s 4-3 in 12 innings. The winning run was scored on an error.

SOFTBALL

ON A ROLL: Santa Fe Indian School completed a perfect run through its own tournament, beating Navajo Prep 7-3 in Saturday’s semifinals, followed later in the day by a 8-4 win over Hope Christian.

UPCOMING THINGS TO SEE OR DO

CHEER: The high school state spirit championsh­ips will be held today and Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena in Albuquerqu­e at 8:30 a.m.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Santa Fe Little League is holding tryouts for majors for players aged 10-14 on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Alto Park.
