A Thousand Horses starts work on second album after rapid rise
Michael Hobby is ready to get back on a headlining tour.
Hobby is a member of the country outfit A Thousand Horses.
The band is rounded out by Zach Brown, Graham DeLoach, Bill Satcher.
The quartet released the EP “Bridges” in June.
The band wrapped up a run opening for Kid Rock and will begin headlining shows with its show in Albuquerque on Sunday, March 25.
In between, Hobby says the band is getting in the studio with Grammywinning producer Dave Cobb.
“We’re excited to be back in the studio with Dave,” he says. “We’ve been working with Dave since the beginning. He was there when we named the band. We’re excited to get back with him and make a real sophomore record. We’re going to dig in and make an awesome piece.”
Since debuting with the single “Smoke” in 2015, A Thousand Horses has been on the fast track in country music.
The single reached No. 1 on U.S. country airplay, which helped the band get some traction in the industry.
Though the band is still fairly new to many listeners, the four members have a long history together.
Hobby wanted to play music since he was a kid, and when he got his first guitar at 11, his life changed.
“I remember I got it at an auction barn,” he says. “My mom would drag me to it every Saturday or Sunday. When you’re a kid, you don’t have a choice. It was $20, and my mom lent the money to me. I still haven’t paid her back.”
After he caught the music bug, he met Satcher in middle school.
Then DeLoach came into the picture during summers when he’d visit Satcher, his cousin.
“Then we moved to Nashville (Tenn.) and met Zach,” he says. “That’s how A Thousand Horses was born. We put the band together in 2010. To me, we’re the lucky ones to figure out what we wanted to do for a living at a young age.”
Since the band’s debut album, “Southernality,” in 2015, Hobby has seen the band grow creatively.
“We’re focusing more on who we are and not thinking about the BS that surrounds it. We’ve been on the road heavy for the last three or four years, and naturally our brotherhood has grown. It’s the evolution of life, and we continue to grow.”
