Philomene Markowski Harris
Philomene Markowski Harris, age 90, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March
16, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Born July 28, 1927 in Linden, New Jersey she was the daughter of the late John Markowski and Mary (Slezak) Markowski.
She graduated from Mount Sinai Hospital Nursing School in New York City in 1948 with a degree in nursing and worked in the medical field until her retirement in 1989.
Philomene "Phyl" and her late husband of thirty eight years, Elliot Harris, made Albuquerque their home in September 1950. They fell in love with New Mexico and never left. Philomene often talked about the first time they came through the canyon when the sun was going down. The beautiful memory of seeing her first New Mexico sunset stayed with her some 68 years later, recalling that special moment even in the last few weeks of her life.
Hers was a life well-lived. She loved cooking for her family, reading, and gardening. She loved theatre and the Santa Fe opera. She loved to travel to new places and stayed active much of her life until age and health slowed her down. She gave unconditional love to her four children and was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren and great - grandchildren. She left a legacy of love and many sweet memories for all who loved her. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, dreamer, creator, matriarch, best fudge maker ever, kind, generous, and simply the greatest gift to the family that she made possible.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Munger and son in-law, Nick Munger of Albuquerque, daughter, Lori Allrid and son in-law, Alan Allrid of Atlanta, Georgia; 6 grandchildren, Nicole Sheriff, Aaron Marsh, JoAnna Reneker, Nathan Adair-Harris, Jonathan Marsh and Kelsey Munger, and 6 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Elliot Walter Harris, daughter, Toni Adair-Harris, and son, Jeffrey Craig Harris.
A Memorial Service for Philomene Harris will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH – Lomas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Operation Smile online at www. operationsmile.org.
