Giants’ Bumgarner expected to be out for 2 months

-

SAN FRANCISCO — Giants ace Madison Bumgarner is expected to miss at least the first two months of the season after undergoing surgery Saturday to have three pins inserted into the broken pinkie on his pitching hand.

The 28-year-old lefty was injured Friday when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield in a spring training game. The outing was supposed to be Bumgarner’s final tuneup before his opening day start.

ANGELS: Shohei Ohtani’s final time on the mound in spring training was a mixed bag, leaving the team noncommittal on what’s next for the two-way star from Japan. He worked into the sixth inning of an intrasquad game on a back field, throwing only 47 strikes in 85 pitches to mostly minor leaguers. He walked five, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches while allowing two runs on just two hits. As a DH, Ohtani has batted .107 with three singles in 28 at-bats his spring.

COACH HURT: Howard Johnson, the former MLB third baseman now serving as hitting coach for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A team, was struck in the face by a foul line drive into the dugout and taken to an area hospital. Cleveland shortstop Erik Gonzalez sent a fourth-inning pitch toward the Rangers’ dugout, where Johnson was struck high on his left cheekbone, below his eye. “All in all, the reports right now are generally positive,” said manager Jeff Banister.

RED SOX: Ace Chris Sale was knocked off the mound by a line drive, but he walked off the field under his own power. The team say he has a bruised left hip,

ROCKIES: Outfielder David Dahl has been optioned to Albuquerque, and Albuquerque native Austin House and catcher Anthony Benboom have been reassigned to minor league camp.

RANGERS: Popular 44-year-old pitcher Bartolo Colon has been released him from his minor league contract.

BRAVES: Left-hander Scott Kazmir was released after he fell short in his bid to win the No. 5 spot in the team’s rotation. The 34-year-old Kazmir, acquired in a Dec. 18 trade that sent outfielder Matt Kemp to the Dodgers, will earn $15,554,483 on the final year of his contract this season.
