SAL PUENTES CHAMPIONSHIP:
At Rio Rancho High, Garrett Langrell’s single to right-center in the bottom of the ninth plated his brother, Connor, with the winning run as No. 7 Clovis beat No. 9 Cleveland 3-2 to win the Sal Puentes/Rio Rancho tournament for the second time in the last three years.
The Wildcats (12-3), who lost to Cleveland in last year’s tourney finale — and also lost to the Storm just a couple of weeks ago in Rio Rancho — never trailed, going ahead 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning.
The Storm (8-5) tied the game with consecutive two-out doubles by Jack Murano, EJ Rendon and Colten Madison in the top of the sixth.
The score remained tied 2-2, although the Storm squandered chances to take the lead in the eighth and ninth.
In Clovis’ half of the ninth, Connor Langrell drew a walk off Rams reliever Damien Roddy, moved to second on Jace Piepkorn’s sacrifice and crossed the plate on his brother’s game-winning single.
Self-proclaimed “rubber arm” Colson Faircloth (4-0) went the distance, scattering five hits, striking out four and using 111 pitches.
“Last year, I faced them in the Hobbs tournament, did real good against them, gave up two runs I think,” Faircloth, a senior southpaw, said. “I feel fine — I’ve got a rubber arm. I probably could have gone another two innings.”
Clovis completed an impressive weekend, having dispatched Albuquerque Academy and the host Rams in the first two rounds. The Wildcats are back here this Saturday, opening District 2-6A action at Eldorado.
Cleveland opens 1-6A action Tuesday afternoon against Cibola.
