7-run third lifts Fresno State to 14-4 KO of Lobos

UNM tennis men handle Nevada in Mountain West Conference opener

Fresno State shortstop Katie Castellon slammed two home runs, one in a seven-run third inning, as the visiting Bulldogs routed New Mexico 14-4 in a five-inning Mountain West Conference softball game on Friday night.

One night earlier, the Lobos (9-25, 3-5) got a dramatic walk-off two-run, two-out single from Monica Salas to defeat the Bulldogs (18-15, 3-2) 4-3. The win snapped an 11-game UNM losing streak to Fresno State .The two teams play the series finale today at noon.

Chelsea Johnson singled twice and drove in three runs over the first two innings, giving the Lobos a 4-0 lead. It was all Bulldogs from there.

Alexis Ruel allowed 10 runs in four-plus innings for the Lobos.

In Portales, senior first baseman Erikka Burke became Eastern New Mexico’s career home run leader by hitting her 34th as the Greyhounds (1522, 8-13 Lone Star) fell 11-3 to NCAA Division II No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce (31-3, 16-2).

BASEBALL: In Las Cruces, three New Mexico State errors led to four unearned runs as Sacramento State (10-14) defeated the Aggies (16-11) 7-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. Logan Ehnes had two hits and scored twice for the Aggies. The series finale is today at 11:05 a.m.

In Portales, Zach Shank and Malcolm Smith each had two RBIs in for Eastern New Mexico (1512, 1-6) in its 4-2 win over Cameron (13-17, 3-4). ENMU lost 9-2 in game two.

TENNIS: Freshman Stepan Holis had the clinching straight-set singles victory after teaming with Ricky Hernandez-Tong for a doubles win earlier, and the New Mexico men (11-7) handled Nevada (11-4) 4-1 in the Mountain West opener for both teams. UNM returns to action Sunday at league foe Fresno State.

In Kansas City, Mo., New Mexico State (11-6, 2-0) earned the doubles point when Chicago State (5-14, 0-2) forfeited the No. 3 doubles spot in an eventual 6-1 Aggies win. NMSU wraps up WAC cluster play today vs. Seattle.

GOLF: The University of New Mexico men are in Augusta, Ga., today for the two-day, three-round 3M Augusta Invitation­al at Forrest Hills Country Club. The 15-team field is led by No. 15 Illinois, No. 18 UCLA and No. 22 Wake Forest. Redshirt senior Andre Garcia, junior Sean Carlon, freshman Galven Green, sophomore Sam Dickey and redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair will play for UNM.

TRACK AND FIELD: In Austin, Texas, Marcus Parker ran 10.31 seconds in the 100 meters at the Texas Relays prelims, qualifying for today’s finals and for the NCAA Division II championsh­ips.
