Melanie M. Pendergast

Melanie (Martin) Pendergast, 64, of Albuquerque, NM, died Thursday, March 29, 2018 at home. Melanie was born in Syracuse, NY, the oldest of three children to Marilyn A. and Norman J. Martin. She graduated from Bishop Ludden High School and LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY.

She worked in the insurance industry for 25 years. She began her career as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual, Hanover Insurance Co. and Broome County, NY, moving on to become Vice President at POMCO, an employee benefits company in Syracuse until her retirement in 1999. In Albuquerque, she served as President and Board member at SAFE House.

She was an avid golfer and member of the Canyon Club at Four Hills, where she served as a Board member for 12 years. She was President of the WGA in 2009. Melanie was the City Champion at her handicap in 2009. In 2016 she had her first hole-in-one in Phoenix, Arizona. She also closely followed her favorite sports teams at LeMoyne College, Syracuse University, Wisconsin, UNM, the Yankees, and Notre Dame. She was an avid fan of the entertainment industry, including the Oscars, and the Emmys.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church.

Melanie fought a rare form of sarcoma for five years, never complained, and always had a positive attitude, with a smile.

Melanie is survived by her husband of 39 years, James J. Pendergast, of Albuquerque; two sons, Technical Sergeant Shaun (Colleen) M. Pendergast, of South Korea, and Casey (Becky) M. Pendergast of Albuquerque; two brothers, Paul (Liz) Martin, and Patrick (Rebecca) Martin, both of Baldwinsville, NY; and several nieces and nephews. She had numerous friends at the Canyon Club, Tanoan and the Southwest Women’s Golf Association.

Calling Hours will be held Monday, April 2, 2018 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church 811 Guyamas Pl. NE, Albuquerque 8710. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque 87109. A Reception will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Canyon Club at Four Hills, 911 4 Hills Rd. SE, Albuquerque, 87123. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SAFE House or the UNMH Cancer Center.
