Fresno State hurler no-hits Lobos, fans 15 in 5 innings

- JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Fresno State softball pitcher Danielle East could have given teammates a day off in the field on Saturday and still beaten host New Mexico.

Every Lobo batter who made an out — all 15 — struck out in a 10-0, five-inning victory for the Bulldogs at Lobo Softball Field.

East’s game wasn’t perfect — the lefty (9-7) walked D’Andra DeFlora in one appearance and hit her with a pitch in another — but it was overwhelmingly dominant.

The rebuilding Lobos (9-26, 3-6 Mountain West) earned a stirring walk-off win Friday night over the Bulldogs (19-15, 4-2) to begin the three-game set. It was the first time in 12 games UNM had defeated Fresno State.

Since then, the Bulldogs outscored UNM 24-4 and outhit the Lobos 22-5 in a pair of five-inning knockouts.

Jensen Main (4-12) took the loss and struggled mightily — 10 runs on 11 hits, four walks, a wild pitch and six hit batters to go with six strikeouts, all in five innings.

UNM tries again Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at New Mexico State.

■ In Kansas City, Mo., New Mexico State (18-14, 3-0) swept a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader 7-2 and 7-3 over UMKC (10-25, 0-3). Kelsey Horton and Victoria Castro homered for the Aggies in the first game. Analise De La Roca homered for the Aggies in the nightcap.

BASEBALL: In Las Cruces, P.J. Floyd had a three-run homer for Sacramento State (11-14, 2-1), which had 12 hits overall and won 6-2 over New Mexico State (16-12, 3-3) in the rubber game of a threegame WAC set. The Aggies managed only six hits, all singles.

TENNIS: In El Paso, the UNM women (6-6) won 4-0 over shorthanded UTEP (6-11). The host Miners entered the match with just five healthy players, meaning UNM just needed to win one of the two doubles matches, and the No. 1 team of Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Danielle Quevedo did just that with a 6-1 win over Lois Wagenvoort and Raven Bennett.

New Mexico looks to get above .500 with a morning match today at New Mexico State.

■ In Kansas City, Mo., New Mexico State’s men (12-6, 3-0) took first place in the WAC with a 7-0 shutout of Seattle University (7-12, 0-3) in league cluster play.

GOLF: In Augusta, Ga., the New Mexico men are in 11th place among 15 teams after two rounds of the 3M Augusta Invitational held at Forest Hills Golf Club. The Lobos shot 293 and 289 for a 6-over 582 through two rounds. The final round is today.

No. 13 Illinois is 12-under 164 to lead by six strokes over secondplace Tennessee. UNM is only six strokes behind the two teams (Georgia State, South Carolina) tied for fifth at even par.

Galven Green is at par and tied for 19th to lead UNM. Other Lobos: Andre Garcia, Sean Carlon and Ross Sinclair, all at 2-over, and Sam Dickey at 17-over.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: At Lucky 66 Bowl, the Lobos closed out their only home stand of the season with a Saturday split, losing 4-1 to Arizona State and blanking Abilene Christian 5-0.

All three of UNM’s seniors — Eastyn Baleto, Chloe Crappell and Maddie Irwin — won at least three matches during the team’s four matches this weekend.

The partnership of Baleto and Lauren Twitty went undefeated over the four matches. Crappell and Yasmin Tan and Irwin & Erin Martin went 3-1.
