- BY JAMES YODICE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

La Cueva High School’s baseball team on Saturday afternoon ran its winning streak to 14 games with a District 2-6A doubleheader sweep on the road at Manzano.

The Bears (14-2, 2-0) beat Monarchs lefty Mitchell Parker 6-1 in the opener, and La Cueva took the second game 9-1.

La Cueva junior right-hander Ben Schoneman outpitched the highly touted Parker, tossing a 2-hitter while striking out 14 Manzano batters.

Kevin Gutierrez of Manzano hit a home run off Schoneman in the bottom of the fourth for the game’s first run, but the Bears answered with four runs in the top of the fifth.

Ryan Ramos and Schoneman had RBI singles to give La Cueva a 2-1 lead, and Jack Pineda and Ryan Johnson also drove in runs.

Parker was chased in the sixth after giving up two additional runs to the Bears.

Hunter Boyden pitched La Cueva to a win in the second game, and Ramos drove in two additional runs for the Bears.

Sandia and Clovis also swept 2-6A twin bills on Saturday.

The Matadors went to Santa Fe and won 5-4 in 9 innings in Game 1 before routing the Demons 14-0 in the second game.

Tyler Scheler had an RBI double to left field with two outs in the top of the ninth of Game 1 to put the Matadors (11-4, 2-0) ahead by a run.

Ricky Apodaca pitched out of a jam in the bottom half, recording a strikeout with Santa Fe runners at second and third to end the game.

Apodaca keyed the Game 2 victory with three hits, including an inside-the-park home run and six RBIs.

At Eldorado, Clovis pitching was perfect as the Wildcats blanked the Eagles 2-0 and 6-0.

Rio Rancho on Saturday downed Cleveland 6-1 as the Rams rebounded from a 12-0 loss to Volcano Vista on Thursday. Righty Bodhi Bolen gave up one run over 6⅓ innings for Rio Rancho.

From District 5-5A, St. Pius shut out Valencia 11-0 in five innings.

Sophomore southpaw Hayden Walker struck out 10 in a complete-game 1-hitter for the Sartans (9-8, 2-0).

St. Pius would get all the offense it needed in the second inning, with Jacob McCoy and Austin Jaramillo hitting back-to-back triples and Nate Sanchez adding an RBI single.
