WDL THE CITY Council voted to decriminalize marijuana so that more local folks would smoke it and get high and forget — or not care — their poor judgment on so many votes, most obvious being to spend, and deny a vote on, over $75 million (for) hurting long-time small businesses on Central Avenue, ruining old Route 66, and creating a soon-to-be-obsolete ART bus system. AS IT turns out, Trump isn’t exactly the “You’re fired!” Mr. Tough Guy we saw on The Apprentice. He doesn’t even have the guts — or decency — to fire members of his own administration face-to-face. DG

... WE WANT to ban guns, so why not ban contact sports like football — we know what they can do to a child’s brain. People have suggested “smart guns,” so why not “smart cars” that disable cell phones inside them? Then there’s universal background checks — knowing how many “parents” abuse their kids, why not check anyone who wants to have a child? BL

RE: SOUTH Valley Academy “D “grade. Graduation is determined by grades, and grades are subjective from teacher to teacher, school to school. The PARCC is the true measure of the standards teachers are required to teach. If teachers don’t teach standards, students will not be proficient. Up the rigor, teach the standards, get rid of the fluff. LF

SOUTH VALLEY Academy handed out diplomas to 87 percent of its students even though 84 percent are not proficient in reading and 96 percent are not proficient in math, and the Journal gives the SVA principal front page accolades for turning diplomas into the equivalent of participation trophies. BC

MUCH OF the friction in today’s society seems to be similar to events 100 years ago in Russia. We have bolsheviks and mensheviks — note the lower case — in our country now. There are mensheviks who pretend to be bolsheviks, and politicians who bend over backward to not offend them. We have lost the meaning of how a democracy works. You might want to Google those two terms if you’re not familiar with them. JB

ADVERTISERS FOR a TV program (Fox’s “Ingraham Angle”) are paying attention to a high school student who did not like what was said about him? Really? And this same student is a member of the Party of Tolerance? It’s really the Party of Intolerance. It only tolerates those who fully agree with their opinions. JEH

THE NEW mayor requests a tax increase because of a large deficit in the city coffers. What does he do next? He requests the largest budget ever that will also cause a large deficit. A large portion of this budget goes to his liberal causes. I don’t remember him promoting this during his run for office. SS

SELF-DRIVING cars make no sense, except the technology concept. Self-driving cars still need a human near the wheel. Are we that lazy and stupid? Technology will and is going to make humans worthless; we are self destructing, seriously, (there’s) even a program that corrects my poor letter writing. LB
