IT firm expands into ABQ with 100 new jobs
2NDGEAR refurbishes educational equipment
A California-based company that refurbishes IT equipment for educational systems is expanding to Albuquerque, bringing with it 100 new jobs.
The company, 2NDGEAR, will begin hiring locally in July and will open in the fall at 7501 Meridian NW, near Unser and Interstate 40.
At a news conference on Monday, Gov. Susana Martinez said the state was “proud to welcome another great employer to New Mexico as we continue to grow our thriving tech sector.”
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said the announcement means more economic base jobs that bring out-of-state money into New Mexico.
2NDGEAR’s services include data destruction, equipment trade-in, e-waste recycling, on-site help desk, software and hardware installations and de-installations. It will apply for money from New Mexico’s Job Training Incentive Program, which reimburses businesses for costs associated with employee training, according to information provided by the state.
The company will hire for entry-level and managerial positions in operations, technical repair, shipping and receiving and sales.
Richard Heard, president of 2NDGEAR’s parent company, Insight Investments, said 2NDGEAR plans to double its business in the next five years. He told the Journal he is “very confident” the company will be able to find the talent it is seeking in New Mexico.
In his comments at the press conference, Heard said one of the company’s clients is Hope Christian School in Albuquerque. He also described a twoyear site selection process that began with a shortlist of 20 cities and ended with Albuquerque.
“We’re not Boeing, we’re not Amazon, but you treated us like we were,” he said.
