SPORTS SPEAK UP!
NCAA SPORTS success is closely tied to cash flow of respective athletic departments. The Aggies are experiencing success over UNM with MUCH lower funding than the Lobos. The NMSU Athletic Department has been paying its own way for years, with no forgiveness of repeated overspending that UNM gets away with year after year. Pay as you go should apply equally to both UNM and NMSU. After that happens for years, then let’s compare records for wins and losses over time. — AGGIE #78/78
VOTE — OLD FORMAT — by a mile (for the scoreboard page). Font size is too small. From a 24-year subscriber. — D. Runyan, Albuquerque
MAYBE IF New Mexico improves its economic situation which in turn presents a healthier quality of life, then should we worry about UNM wanting the top paid coaches in the MWC. — MarkSD
THANKS TO to the Journal for the salary information for UNM Athletics, easy to see why its finances are always in the cherry red, $140K for person in charge of tickets, $130K for volleyball coach. Signs of the Apocalypse, to quote Sports Illustrated. — Burt
AS HEAD COACH of UNM track & field/ cross country, Joe Franklin’s salary needs to be doubled from $115K a year. With a couple of NCAA championships under his belt he deserves it. Every college runner and coach knows where the University of New Mexico is thanks to their achievements. I have spoken to a number of high school track and field athletes from out of state and have asked them if they know who the NCAA cross country women’s championship team is and without hesitation they say UNM. Thanks coach, you put us on the map! — DS, Los Lunas
KATIE HNIDA’S agenda is clear. She was not invited to speak to UNM athletes (this was not limited to football) because her presentations in 2015 were not very good. It sounds as though this is a Katie Hnida problem rather than a Bob Davie problem. But like so many other university blunders, Bob Davie will bear the blame for Hnida’s grudge. — Linda, retired Lobo
