FIRE SUPPRESSION: With the ongoing drought deepening, the Santa Fe National Forest will be under Stage I fire restrictions beginning today. The restrictions, mean fires, campfires, charcoal grills, and coal and wood stoves are allowed only in developed campsites or picnic areas where agency-built fire rings or grills are available.
Campfires are prohibited at all dispersed camping sites. Stoves, lanterns or heaters fueled by propane or other liquefied petroleum fuels may be used in areas cleared of flammable materials within three feet of the device, if they meet manufacturer’s safety specifications and have on/ off switches.
Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or buildings and developed recreation sites. Fireworks are always prohibited in all national forests. HOOPS: Potential college basketball players will have a chance to display their talents locally when Northern New Mexico College holds the first Eagle Showcase Camp June 21-24 in Española. All varsity games will be played at the NNMC Eagle Memorial Sportsplex, and it’s expected regional college coaches from the NAIA, NCJCAA, NCAA D2 and NCAA D3 will attend. YOUTH HOOPS: Local girls basketball players looking to play at the highest level will have the opportunity to try out for the Lady Elite team for northern New Mexico players. Tryouts for 10-under girls will be Saturday at the Rec Center in Las Vegas and 14-under will be April 28 at the Rec Center. The teams anticipate playing for the chance to compete in the first Junior NBA World Tournament at the Walt Disney World Florida’s ESPN Complex. For more information call 505-7182368.

RUNNING: Breast cancer research will benefit from the 8th annual Run for Her Life 5K/10K/walk April 22 at East Park. The 9 a.m. run is sponsored by the Los Alamos Chapter of Hadassah for breast cancer research at Hadassah Medical Center in Israel.
